anti-spam crew good or bad idea?

Posted by Death - May 31st, 2010

well? if we had a crew of NG users who actually bothered to try blamming those crap spam flashes, would you join? and even if you didn't, do you think it's a good idea?

might be good idea. yes.

Well get some people with high B/P and exp so their votes matter and sure, people could post links to the spam under submission and then 0 it, if it is a typical horrible spam flash.

yes

It's a good idea, but I've seen this many times. The anti-spam crew thing never works out, nor do I appreciate the mass voting.

Mass-voting is bad.

The problem of the abundance of crappy flashes requires a long-term solution, partially through changes to the B/P system and increased enforcement of anti-savewhoring on the part of the admins, and also through increased intelligence and self-control on the part of voters.

No one group can do it; it has to be a large-scale change on the part of the majority of Portal browsers. I used to lead the (still-running) Elite Guard Barracks, a group of dozens of high-ranking Newgrounders who vote fairly (based on personal perception of quality) and fight abuse, and we couldn't decide things on our own...not that'd we want to, that'd be against the whole point, but just saying that you couldn't dominate the system even with enormous vote power.

I recommend a mixture of realism and idealism. Focus primarily on fighting abuse (stolen flashes, rulebreaking flashes, abusive reviews, etc etc, as they're immeasurably more harmful than mere crap that will vanish into the guts of the Portal after passing judgment). Continue voting fairly, based on what you think of a flash and not whether or not you think it'll pass. Look into the NGPD and Elite Guard Barracks in the Clubs and Crews forum when you start moving up the ranks.

I'm mostly retired from all this B/P business (when you've gotten tens of thousands of points, it starts getting dull...), but I'll be glad to answer any questions you have.

thanks for the well thought out response. a lot of what you said makes sense, I'll keep all that in mind. So for now it looks like it's no-go, but I still wanna get more people's opinions on this.

Also, to tyler2513: when I ran the Elite Guard Barracks, nobody was ever hacked (or rather, phished, as that's what the vast majority of account theft is), as we stressed proper security precautions. A little internet-savvy can protect you from most of what those dickheads can do.

1. Never sign in to Newgrounds unless you've personally typed the URL. Do not sign in if a link brought you there, as it may be a spoofed page.

2. Never click any links sent to you by somebody you don't know (especially through NG PM's), and even when you DO know them, right-click the link and check to see where it goes before clicking it.

3. Have strong passwords. No dictionary words, no names traceable to you, no birthdays. Use alternating cases, special characters, numbers, etc. Don't save them to your browser, as somebody with the right knowledge can get to them if they really want.

4. Don't just have a secure NG account; have secure e-mail accounts, as well. If they can get into the e-mail account you use for Newgrounds, they can hijack your account through account recovery. Don't dabble in that "security question" crap, as invariably all the questions are insanely personal and defeat the purpose of having a password at all. Make your security question answer a second password. If your e-mail has a secondary e-mail account used for ITS password retrieval system, be sure to follow the same procedure for the secondary, as well.

5. Use different passwords for anything important. That way, if they discover one password, you only lose one internet-function, not all of them.

6. Practice basic computer safety; have a firewall, anti-malware programs, and always sign out of websites when using a shared computer.

You're much more likely to GIVE your account to someone than to have it TAKEN, as phishing netted quite a few Newgrounders during the worst of the DD crap, including mods who really should have known better. Follow these precautions and I can all but guarantee that nothing will happen to you. In any case, at the risk of being blunt, I doubt anybody will care enough to try to steal your accounts. I was a very influential guy during my tenure as EGB leader, and nobody ever came close to compromising my security, though they tried (evident by e-mail notifications of attempted password retrievals that failed).

I'm more concerned about flagging reviews.

I know Evil.
